New sponsors line up for 2012

The 2012 Scotland's Finest Woods Awards are delighted to have a raft of sponsors for this year's Awards programme.
SFW Chairman, Chris Inglis, said: "We are absolutely delighted that so many sponsors, new and old, are on board for the 2012 Awards and we look forward to a another exciting year of competition. In particular we welcome James Jones & Sons Ltd, Scottish Woodlands Ltd and UPM Tilhill as new sponsors. New sponsorship is enabling us to to strengthen further our line-up of awards and prizes".
"A brand new category in the Quality Timber Awards this year is for newly-planted commercial woodlands focusing on productive conifer woodland of 10 hectares or more in extent, up to 5 years old and established on previously bare land."

2012 Awards open for entry

The focus of the Scotland's Finest Woods Awards in 2012 is on the sustainable management of our woods and forests and the economic, environmental and social benefits they deliver to people in Scotland.
Scotland's Finest Woods' Executive Director, Peter Wilson, said:
'This year we are setting out to showcase and reward all that is best in Scotland's management of its woods and forests and how they contribute to the wealth and wellbeing of Scotland's people. Last year's awards produced a bumper crop of top class winning entries and this year our judges will once again be seeking out Scotland's finest woods and rewarding the pursuit of excellence. So don't be shy, enter your woodland project today and be part of it!'
This year there are four main award categories:
- Schools Award: Schools and pre-school projects are invited to enter our ever-popular Schools Award with £750 of prize money to be won.
- Community Woodlands Award: Community and urban projects are invited to compete for a Community Woodlands Award focusing specifically on the Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN) Activity Area: the Tim Stead Trophy and £3,000 of prize money are up for grabs.
- New Native Woods Award: New native woodland projects are invited to compete for this award: the Woodland Trust Scotland Trophy and £750 are there to be won.
- Quality Timber Awards: Focusing on quality timber, whether from newly-planted woods, single stands or large multi-purpose woods, woodland owners of whatever size are invited to compete in our three competitions with three trophies and £3,000 of prize money at stake.
- Enter our newest award for new commercial woodlands and compete for the new James Jones Trophy. Entry is open to newly-planted productive conifer woodland of 10 hectares or more in extent, up to 5 years old and established on previously bare land where the planning, practice and management regime is designed to result in high quality timber production.
- Enter single stands or compartments of trees where exemplary silviculture results in high quality timber production and compete for the Hunter Blair Trophy
- Enter whole estates managed as multi-purpose forests in which high quality timber production is a major objective and compete for the John Kennedy Trophy.
Entries must be received by 31st March 2012.
Short-listed entries will be will be judged between 30th April and 11th May.
The Best of Scotland's Woods

Environment & Climate Change Minister, Stewart Stevenson, presented awards to twelve of Scotland's finest woods and woodland projects at the Royal Highland Show today (Friday 24 June).
SFW's Peter Wilson said: "The quality of what is happening out there is just tremendous so it has been another vintage year for the Awards!"
